Join us at the Hebridean Whale Centre in Tobermory for an evening talk from local experts. The talk series is supported by Tobermory Distillery who have provided a complimentary glass of delicious local gin for attendees.

7pm Thursday 12th June - Challenging Creature Comforts in Conservation

May Redfern is one of the National Trust for Scotland rangers for Mull and Iona, and will discuss her last few years in various public engagement and conservations roles here on the West Coast. May will take a closer look at how the public perceive some of our lesser-known and lesser-liked species. With a bit of audience discussion and participation, May will explore how some of these stereotypes could have the potential to have a huge impact on conservation efforts.

7pm Thursday 19th June - North Atlantic Whaling

Norwegian Minke, Bottlenose, Killer and Pilot Whaling in the North Atlantic (1948 - 1986)

Dr Conor Ryan' talk will take a closer look at whaling here in the North Atlantic. Conor will share insights from his interviews with whalers who hunted minkes here in Scotland, as well as his painstaking analysis of over 100,000 records of Norwegian "small" whale catches from archives in Norway. Conor has published several papers on North Atlantic whaling, and this talk is a sneak peak at upcoming paper.

7pm Thursday 26th June - Coastal Geology of Mull, Iona and Ulva

James (Seamus) Westland from Mull Geology presents a lavishly illustrated talk that looks at the rocks and scenery of Mull and the other islands nearby. James will explore headlands, sea stacks, caves, natural arches and other geomorphological features, many of which are in seldom visited locations. Find out about the natural processes that have shaped this amazing landscape.

7pm Thursday 3rd July - Wings Over Waves: The Northern Gannet

Emily McNulty will introduce the magnificent Northern Gannet, one of the UKs largest seabirds. Scotland is home to around 60% of Europe’s gannets, and these beautiful seabirds are a much loved sight around our coasts. Emily will take a look at the incredible adaptations that make this bird such an effective hunter, as well as discussing their ecology and threats they face today.
