HWDT’s Floating Classroom to visit Barra and South Uist schools for the first time in 10 years

Twice a year, HWDT’s flagship research vessel, Silurian, transforms into our popular floating classroom. Sailing to schools across the west coast, the crew welcomes pupils aboard to experience life on board a Scottish whale research yacht.

This September, we will be setting sail to Barra and South Uist to welcome schools aboard Silurian, some for the first time in 10 years. Pupils will take part in inspirational outdoor experiences designed to spark an interest in the marine environment and inspire the decision makers of the future. While aboard, pupils will explore the yacht, meet the crew, hoist the sail, spot with binoculars, shout "sighting” and listen to the world beneath the waves.

JOIN US ON BOARD

Throughout the week, the crew will be inviting the local community on board Silurian to find out more about HWDT and our monitoring work at our free drop-in ‘Open Boat’ events:

  • Monday 16 September, Castlebay Marina, 4 - 6pm

  • Wednesday 18 September, Lochboisdale Harbour, 4 - 6pm

Jump aboard for your chance to explore the vessel, check out the equipment, learn about the work of the Trust and the research that’s been undertaken for over 20 years, and have a general nosy around.

This is a great opportunity for local communities to find out how they can get involved by reporting their sightings through our community sightings network, Whale Track, or by taking part in a research exhibition onboard Silurian.

Drop-in event, no booking required.

Free entry, but donations welcome.

A warm thanks to Castlebay Marina and Lochboisdale Harbour for hosting us.
